Timeline: UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, Department of Ethnomusicology

2007

The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music was established in November, 2007, with Timothy  Rice as director.

2008 Ash Grove 50th Anniversary: Legend and Legacy, concerts and symposium (April 18-20, 2008).

2008

Undergraduate ethnomusicology concentration renamed "World Music."

2008

Creation of three undergraduate emphases in the world music concentration: 1) performance and/or composition; 2) public ethnomusicology; and 3) scholarly/research. These emphases are intended to prepare students for varied career paths.

2009

Duke Ellington's 110th Birthday Festival of Music (April 4-5, 2009).

2009

New HASOM theory course created (Ethnomusicology, Music, and Musicology M87 - "History, Culture, and Creativity") and taught for the first time, Fall 2009.

2009

Dialogue in Music Project: Africa Meets North America, 3rd International Symposium and Festival (October 22-25, 2009).

Creation of two emphases in the jazz studies concentration:
1) performance and 2) composition.

2010-11


Worlds of Music at UCLA: Celebrating 50 Years of Ethnomusicology (May 2010 through May 2011). A year of activities campuswide to celebrate the 50th anniversary.
