GENERAL RIGHTS AND REQUIREMENTS
A teaching assistant is a “student teacher” selected for his/her scholarship and promise as a teacher, and serving an apprenticeship under the active tutelage and supervision of a regular faculty member who is responsible for curriculum and instruction in the University. Teaching assistants are course assistants for undergraduate courses (lower and upper division). Their assignments include an appropriate range of supportive activities such as: assisting the faculty member with the preparation of course materials and/or laboratory demonstrations; attending the faculty member’s lectures, laboratory instruction periods, and/or scheduled instruction periods in non-traditional formats; reading student papers and examinations; holding office hours; giving tutorial or small group assistance to students; teaching in scheduled or unscheduled discussion, quiz, laboratory or field sections for the faculty member in charge. Teaching assistants are not to be utilized exclusively as readers.
A teaching associate is a teaching assistant who has demonstrated his/her capabilities as a student teacher and scholar; who has a master’s degree or has completed at least 36 units of graduate course work (not including ESM 375 or 475); has at least one academic year of UCLA TA experience, or approved collegiate teaching experience at a comparable institution [this must be verified by a written letter from that institution]. Advancement to teaching associate is made upon the recommendation of the department chair and is based on performance evaluations by supervising faculty. Duties and restrictions are the same as for teaching assistants.
A teaching fellow is a Ph.D. student formally advanced to doctoral candidacy; has demonstrated professional maturity and excellence as a scholar and teacher; has at least two academic years of UCLA TA experience or approved collegiate teaching experience at a comparable institution [this must be verified by a written letter from that institution]. Advancements are made as described for teaching associates.
TA positions are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the University and the UAW. As such, your name and departmental address will be released to the UAW each term that you are employed in the bargaining unit. The agreement can be retrieved at http://www.gdnet.ucla.edu/gss/appm/appmintro.htm

EVALUATIONS AND AWARDS
Student evaluations of TAs
Teaching Assistants are generally evaluated using the evaluation forms provided by the Office of Instructional Development and administered by the department at the end of each term. TAs will be given a typewritten copy of the comments, and the statistical summaries; this usually occurs around the third week of the following quarter [when the department receives these documents from the Office of Instructional Development].
These evaluations have a number of uses: they provide the TA with helpful feedback; they factor into teaching awards and future teaching assignments; they also serve as a reinforcement in placement dossiers.
Faculty evaluation of TAs
Supervising faculty are urged to observe their assigned apprentice teachers in the classroom and to meet with them on a regular basis to discuss any teaching problems which may arise. You should feel free to call on your supervising faculty for advice regarding your teaching procedures.
Awards
The Luckman Distinguished TA Award is presented to several TAs from various departments in a university-wide competition. This award usually includes a general one-year fellowship. Departmental faculty nominate TAs who are discussed and chosen at a departmental faculty meeting.
