Synopsis: Zì (Uncle) Antonio and zì Vincenzo, are two brothers with a big passion in common: the zampogna (bagpipe). They spend their lives constructing bagpipes and playing all around Italy at festivals. Bakari Kitwana, author, activist, and co-founder of the first ever National Hip-Hop Political Convention, presents "Rap Sessions" -- a multiracial panel of hip-hop experts who are currently touring the nation to engage youth and community leaders in candid, compelling conversations about the hip-hop cultural movement and emerging racial politics of our time. Orientalism, Representation, and the Arts. This symposium explores "orientalism" in Western music and is dedicated to the late scholar and musician Edward Said. A concert by faculty artists from the Department of Ethnomusicology performing concerto-like works with the Department of Music's Philharmonia Orchestra is included. Speakers will explore the representation of cultural identity in Western and other forms of music and revisit issues raised in Said's influential book, Orientalism.
