Jazz Studies Concentration

(B.A. degree in Ethnomusicology)

Students in the jazz studies concentration may, through elective courses, prepare for a career in either performance or composition. Students enter UCLA with a concentration in performance; those interested in an emphasis in composition must apply after their second year in the program.

Jazz Studies Degree Requirements

Performance Emphasis (for students interested in a career in performance). Students take courses in jazz keyboard harmony, theory, improvisation, styles and analysis, private lessons and jazz combo and/or jazz orchestra. Students must also give a senior recital.

Composition Emphasis (for students interested in a career in composition). Students take courses in composition, arranging, jazz keyboard harmony, theory, improvisation, styles and analysis, private lessons, jazz combo and/or jazz orchestra. Students must also compose an original composition which will be performed during their senior year.
