Lecture by Barbara Hampton, City University of New York, Hunter College

“Kasaharee in Ga: Control, Resistance, and Negotiation in Ghanaian Hiplife”

Barbara L. Hampton, Ph.D. earned the M.A degree at UCLA and is Director of the Graduate Program in Ethnomusicology at Hunter College and Professor of Music at Hunter College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. She has served the Society for Ethnomusicology in several capacities, including Newsletter Editor, SEM 2010 Program Chair, organizer of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter, and member of the national Executive Board. She established the Music and Gender Study Group of the International Council for Traditional Music. Her publications are on issues of social theory, gender, African music history and diaspora based on field research conducted in Ghana, Sierra Leone, Cote d'Ivoire, Jamaica, and the United States. Her most recent book was entitled Through African-Centered Prisms.

Named after Nazir Ali Jairazbhoy, the founding chair of the Department of Ethnomusicology and Systematic Musicology, this colloquium series provides an opportunity for students, faculty, and visiting lecturers to share information about their research and discuss other issues important in the field.
