Lecture/demonstration on kabuki music by the ensemble Yamato Gaku (Japanese shamisen and percussion ensemble), featuring guest artist Osho Yamato on shamisen.
For this lecture/demonstration, Yamatogaku’s shamisen (three-stringed plucked lute) and percussion ensemble will present music that accompanies kabuki, a Japanese theatrical form, with brief background information on kabuki and three sample selections of kabuki music—“Tsurukame,” “Kishino Yanagi,” and “Genroku Hanami Odori.”
Yamatogaku U.S.A. has been actively performing Japanese traditional classical and theater musics (hōgaku) in Southern California. The ensemble has appeared at numerous venues, including UCLA, the University of California, Irvine, and various museums. The group also performs at community events such as the New Year’s festivities at the Japanese Community Cultural Center, Cherry Blossom and summer festivals at various locations, and at private celebrations.
