Description
The Association for Recorded Sound Collections is an international organization for those interested in preserving historical sound recordings. The 45th annual meeting will be hosted by the UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive in honor of the Archive’s 50th anniversary. It will be held at the Wilshire Grand Hotell, downtown Los Angeles, and will include special events celebrating one of the nation’s largest collections of ethnographic audio and video.
The conference, which focuses on the history, technology and culture of recorded sound, brings together archivists, audio engineers, record collectors, and many of the world’s foremost experts in recorded sound history and technology, for four days of lectures, tours, demonstrations, workshops, exhibits, and special events.
A day-long Audio Archives 101 workshop on identification, organization, and preservation kicks off the conference on Wednesday morning. Other highlights include conversations with Gail Zappa and Joe Travers (Vaultmeister for the Frank Zappa archive); TV/recording stars Wink Martindale, Paul Petersen and Ron Dante; 101 year-old radio legend Norman Corwin (with an all-star cast recreating one of his 1945 broadcasts); and speakers on a wide range of topics including artists, repertoire, labels, technology and early recording history.
You must register to attend; one-day and student rates are available and you can register on-site.
