REQUIREMENTS FOR B.A. DEGREE IN ETHNOMUSICOLOGY

Students are required to complete requirements for their degree as stipulated in the UCLA General Catalog.

UCLA General CatalogGeneral Education Requirements

VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS EDUCATION MINOR

The Visual and Performing Arts Education (VAPAE) minor in the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture offers a sequence of courses designed to introduce arts majors to key issues and methodologies in the field of arts education and to a broad range of possible careers in the arts, including K-12 teaching, museum education, arts administration, art therapy, and arts advocacy.

MUSIC INDUSTRY MINOR

The Music Industry minor in the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music is a series of courses designed to  (1) introduce students to a critical perspective on the formative effects the music industry and music technology has had on musical practices around the world; (2) prepare students for employment in the music industry, including marketing and sales, recording production, intellectual property, sound recording, and arranging; and (3) contribute to improved communication and interaction between the university, the music industry, and the musical life of Los Angeles. The Music Industry minor is intended to supplement the education of undergraduate students majoring in ethnomusicology, music, and music history.

DOUBLE MAJOR/MINOR

Students may petition for a second major or minor with any other established major or minor at UCLA. Approval to double major or minor must be recommended by both major/minor departments. Final approval is granted by the Dean of the School of the Arts & Architecture. Ethnomusicology must be the primary major, and all requirements for both majors, or minor must be completed before degree can be conferred. For more information and necessary petitions for the double major, or minor, please speak with Alfred Bradley.

REGISTRATION & ENROLLMENT

Registration is the payment of fees each quarter. The UCLA Student Billing Statement (BAR) payment schedule will provide you with a monthly billing statement. If all required fees are not received prior to the first official week of a quarter, you are automatically dropped from all courses, and you will need to re-enroll in each course again.

Enrollment is the process of selecting your classes and is a separate process from registration. Enrollment is accomplished using the university’s electronic enrollment system URSA (University Records System Access). You will receive two enrollment appointments each quarter which provide you a window of time to enroll in classes. You will receive a date and time for a first and second enrollment pass. Courses that have no enrollment restrictions should be enrolled in as early as possible, for best selection.

PTE #s Restricted courses require permission prior to enrollment. This permission is granted by the instructor of the class who will provide a permission to enroll number (PTE#), a five digit number. Courses that are normally restricted include the following: All applied performance private lessons; all jazz combo ensembles, most performance organizations; and music theory courses.

YOU MUST BE ENROLLED IN AT LEAST 12 UNITS AND ALL COURSES BY THE END OF THE THIRD WEEK OF THE QUARTER.

Max and Minimum Units Enrollment in less than 12 units can result in being placed on progress probation and loss of scholarships and/or financial aid. Unless granted an exception by the Office of Student Services, 20 units is the maximum number of units you may enroll in each quarter. An exception is generally granted to students who earned a minimum gpa of 3.00 for the previous quarter, and have a 3.00 gpa overall.

LATE ADD/DROP PROCEDURES

The School of the Arts & Architecture (SOAA) maintains a different policy for adding and dropping courses than the College of Letters & Science (L&S). There is a third week deadline for adding a course, and a fourth weekdeadline to drop a course. All requests for changes to your study list after these deadlines will require approval from the Dean, upon a review of a petition and written explanation. If approved, a $13.00 late fee will be assessed. Approval of a late add/drop request is not granted easily, and therefore timely enrollment in all of your courses is recommended. Late and retroactive add/drop petitions are available in the student services office of both the department and school.

GRADING POLICIES

Pass/No Pass: A student may take one non-major course (4 units) per quarter on a P/NP basis. A student must be in good standing to qualify for enrollment in a P/NP course. You have until Friday of the sixth week to change an eligible course from a grading basis to P/NP. Students currently on either progress or academic probation are not eligible for the P/NP grading option. You may enroll in a maximum of three P/NP per academic year, and you may enroll in a maximum of two P/NP courses in any one quarter (if none were taken in the previous quarter). Students must achieve a "C" or better to receive a PASS grade. Any grade less than a "C" will result in a NO PASS. The advantage of enrolling in P/NP is that you can possibly earn a C grade, without it affecting your gpa. The obvious disadvantage is you could receive a C-, and have the same result as an F(although your gpa still would not be affected). All factors should be considered before enrolling P/NP.

Incomplete Grade & Removal of Incomplete Grade The status Incomplete (I) may be assigned when a student's work is of passing quality, but due to physical and/or emotional illness, a student cannot complete the quarter. It is up to the instructor to determine if the conditions for an incomplete exist. The student has until the last day of instruction of the following quarter to finish the work and remove the incomplete grade.

A Petition For the Removal of Incomplete Grade must be submitted to the Registrar’s' office no later than the tenth week of the quarter you are completing the work. Extensions of time to remove an incomplete are rarely granted. Consideration of an extension may be given if the instructor of the course is on sabbatical the next quarter, or with verified medical illness.

No Report (NR): This will appear on your transcripts if for some reason the instructor is unable or unwilling to provide a final grade. This often happens if a course has been added late, and the final grade roster is printed without your name. If this occurs, you should consult with your instructor or the undergraduate advisor immediately.

Grade Changes: A grade change can only be submitted by the instructor of record. If a student feels they may have received the wrong grade, they should first discuss this matter with their instructor. On occasions clerical and processing errors do occur, causing mistakes with the final grade. There are other situations which might warrant a grade change. However, only the instructor can submit a grade change form.

Repeat of Courses: You are allowed to repeat any course for which you have received a grade C-, D+, D, D-, F, NP, or U. Courses taken for a letter grade MAY NOT be repeated P/NP. NP grades may be repeated for a letter grade or P/NP. Only the first 16 units repeated are applied in raising your UCLA GPA. Only the most recent grade in a course repeated is used.

ETHNOMUSICOLOGY 92/162 – PRIVATE INSTRUCTION IN MUSIC

Ethnomusicology majors (world music concentration only) may enroll in private/semiprivate lessons with a distinguished community-based musician for two units of credit. All costs involved with these lessons are to be paid by the student. For application and information go to Private Instruction in Music or speak with Undergraduate Advisor, Alfred Bradley in Room 1642 SMB.

ETHNOMUSICOLOGY 195A and 195B - COMMUNITY OR CORPORATE INTERNSHIPS IN ETHNOMUSICOLOGY

Ethnomusicology majors may receive University credit for participating in community or corporate internships. Students have the choice of taking Ethnomu 195A (for anyone majoring in ethnomusicology), or Ethnomu 195B (for ethnomusicology majors who are in the Public Ethnomusicology emphasis). For information go to Internship Courses or speak with Undergraduate Advisor, Alfred Bradley in Room 1642 SMB.

ETHNOMUSICOLOGY 197

Faculty of the Department of Ethnomusicology have agreed upon the following policy concerning the ETHNO 197 Special Studies courses:

1) ETHNO 197 is reserved for majors -- or in special instances majors from cognate disciplines (e.g. anthropology, folklore, world arts and cultures, area or ethnic studies centers);

2) An ETHNO 197 topic will be approved only when that topic is not offered as a course during the academic year in question;

3) ETHNO 197 is available only to students with senior standing;

4) ETHNO 197 may be offered only by Academic Senate faculty.

CHANGE OF MAJOR

If you decide to change your major to another major, you must notify the undergraduate advisor immediately, and submit a Change of Major petition to the School or College of your new major. You MAY NOT remain in this major while you are undecided, or completing prerequisites for a new major. You should declare yourself as an “undeclared major” in the College of Letters & Science, once you decide to not enroll in the normal progression of major requirements. Failure to declare yourself a non major will result in a “hold” of your records, possibly restricting any future registration and enrollment at UCLA, until the hold is removed.

HOLDS

Holds can be placed on your records for the following reasons

  • Failure to enroll in a minimum of 12 units by the end of the fourth week

  • Failure to enroll in private lessons if you are receiving them

  • Failure to return department instruments or damage to instrument

WITHDRAWAL FROM SCHOOL

A student may withdraw from any quarter up until the last day of instruction, provided he/she has not taken any final examinations, or completed any of their courses in any way. Withdrawal forms are available in the office of the School of Arts & Architecture (194 Kinross South). You must clear the withdrawal form with the following offices:

  • Cashier’s Office (1125 Murphy Hall)

  • Dean Of Students

  • Academic Advancement Program (if in AAP)

  • Student Services Office, School of Arts & Architecture

Once a final clearance is received, you must surrender you registration and student ID cards. The policy of the School allows one withdrawal with the guaranteed option of returning. If a student must withdraw a second time, there is no such guarantee they will be allowed to return. Withdrawing removes that quarter’s work completely. If you leave on probation, you must return on probation. There is no “leave of absence”. If you miss two consecutive quarters, you must re-apply.

Retroactive Withdrawal In order to withdraw after the last day of instruction for any quarter, you must also complete a “Retroactive Withdrawal Clearance”. This clearance requires each instructor’s signature verifying that the courses attempted that quarter were not completed in any manner. If even one course was completed, you will not be allowed to withdraw retroactively.

Refunds The amount of a refund, if any, is determined by the Registrar’s Office based on the date the withdrawal form is received. Refer to the calendar of deadlines in the billing section of the Schedule of Classes for specific dates regarding refunds.
