The Department of Music offers scholarships to a limited number of incoming students.  All Music Department scholarships are merit based and determined by performance ability, musicality and other demonstrated skills.

UNDERGRADUATE

Generally, scholarships are awarded to top-ranked students following the audition process.  There is no form to fill out to be considered for departmental scholarships. All students who pass through the audition process will be considered.

The largest of these scholarships will fully cover the cost of California resident fees for the academic year.  These scholarships are renewable and are limited to a total of 4 years of support.

GRADUATE

To support graduate studies, UCLA offers several kinds of financial assistance, including fellowships, assistantships, loans, and work-study employment. Merit-based financial support is available in the form of fellowships and teaching assistantships. Fellowships, scholarships, and stipends, which range from partial fees to full fees and nonresident tuition, are awarded primarily to incoming students; assistantships are awarded annually to selected continuing students who apply. Additionally, Gluck Fellowships and Music Partnership assistantships are available to all students through an application and selection process at the beginning of fall quarter.

Entering students apply for fellowships in conjunction with their admission application. (Note: The Diversity Fellowships Supplemental Application is now being collected online as part of the application for Graduate Admissions and Fellowships. This application must be completed - including Diversity Statement on page 2 - in order to be considered for diversity fellowships.) Nominations for campus-wide awards as well as departmental support are made by faculty and forwarded to the necessary faculty committees for decision. Merit based departmental scholarships are determined by the audition for performance and the portfolio for composition.

Factors considered include creative work, academic strength, and, in some cases, financial need. Effort is made to distribute the available resources among all principal areas of study in the department. Continuing students must apply annually for fellowships and assistantships.

Need-based assistance is available to those who qualify (complete FAFSA by March 2nd deadline). The Financial Aid Office calculates need based on the student’s financial resources. For graduate students, need-based financial aid is awarded only in the form of loans and work-study. International students are not eligible to apply for need-based financial aid.
