Private Instruction in Music (Ethnomu 92/162)

The department is pleased to be able to give University credit to students majoring in ethnomusicology, who wish to study with community musicians trained in traditions that are not offered in the regular curriculum. These lessons count as credit toward the undergraduate degree (see Undergraduate Major Requirements).

Lessons are expected to take place off-campus, not at UCLA.

Graduate students MAY NOT enroll in these courses.

Procedures for enrolling in Ethnomu 92 or 162

Students who wish to enroll in Ethnomu 92 or 162 must receive approval of their proposed instructor by a faculty committee. As well, a number of contracts and forms must be filled out and signed. Students must submit all paperwork to Undergraduate Advisor Al Bradley before the deadline (Friday of the first week of the quarter), in order to give the department time to review and approve or disapprove the student's proposal before enrollment deadlines.

STEP 1 Student downloads each of the following items:

1. Instructor's Course Contract (pdf)
2. Faculty Code of Conduct (pdf)
3. Instructor Resume (pdf)*
4. Student's Course Contract (pdf)
5. Student Release of Liability Form (pdf)

*The Instructor Resume (blank form) is to be filled out only if the instructor does not already have a resume. If he/she already has one, please use that one instead. Also, if this is a second request and the instructor has been approved to teach during a previous quarter, it is not necessary to submit another resume.

STEP 2 Student gives items 1 and 2, and possibly 3 to the instructor and works with the instructor to ensure that all paperwork is complete and signed.

STEP 3 Student completes and signs items 4 and 5.

STEP 4 Student returns all required items to Undergraduate Advisor Al Bradley by Friday of the first week of the quarter.

STEP 5 Student's proposal is approved or disapproved. If approved, the student is automatically enrolled in the course by Al Bradley.

STEP 6 If approved, the student downloads the following form and gives it to the instructor to fill out after each lesson:

6. Grading Report Form (pdf)

STEP 7 The student must receive a minimum of 8 lessons.

STEP 8 By Friday of the 9th week, the instructor must submit the Grading Report Form to the chair, who will assign the actual course grade.

STEP 9 By Friday of the 9th week, the student downloads the following form, fills it out and submits it to Al Bradley.

7.Instructor Evaluation Form (pdf)

NOTE: Students who wish to take the course again and study with the same instructor do NOT need to submit another resume for that instructor, although they must submit the remaining paperwork.
