Jazz Studies Concentration

(B.A. degree in Ethnomusicology)

(Effective Fall 2010)

Students in the jazz studies concentration may, through elective courses, prepare for a career in either performance or composition. Students must apply to either the performance or the composition emphasis after their second year in the program.

Jazz Studies Degree Requirements

Performance Emphasis (for students interested in a career in performance). Students take courses in jazz keyboard harmony, theory, improvisation, styles and analysis, private lesssons and jazz combo and/or jazz orchestra. Students must also give a senior recital.

Composition Emphasis (for students interested in a career in composition). Students take courses in composition, arranging, jazz keyboard harmony, theory, improvisation, styles and analysis, private lessons, jazz combo and/or jazz orchestra. Students must also compose an original composition which will be performed during their senior year.
