The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music has exceptionally strong undergraduate and graduate degree programs for students interested in pursuing a career in music research and scholarship. The  courses are taught by some of the most renowned music scholars in the world.

For undergraduates seeking careers in academia, the undergraduate majors in Music History and in World Music provide excellent preparation for graduate work in ethnomusicology, musicology, anthropology, cultural studies, and a number of other fields. These majors also provide an outstanding liberal arts education that prepares students for employment in the music business and journalism and to go on to professional schools in law, business, or medicine.

The Ph.D. programs in ethnomusicology and musicology have been notably successful in placing their graduates in university teaching positions around the U.S. and the world.
