The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music embraces the entire universe of music. We think of our universe as organized in five galaxies: classical music; jazz; music for theater, film, television and visual media; popular music; and world music. In each of these galaxies, we offer a rich array of courses and degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Do you want become a professional trumpet player? A scholar of Chinese music? A jazz improviser? Lecture on Beethoven’s life and work? Compose music for film and television? Write books about rock guitar heroes? Our outstanding faculty can help you achieve those goals. While some students enter our School with focused goals like these and want to spend most of your time in one of these galaxies, we have done our best to create curricular space shuttles that make it easy for students, no matter their direction, to take full advantage of the breadth of offerings in our School. Are you a classical violinist interested in trying your hand at American folk fiddling? Are you interested in how music contributes to gender identity in the U.S. and curious about what happens along this line in other parts of the world? Do you play a Korean instrument and want to learn to compose popular songs in a Korean style? Are you a jazz player with classical chops who wants to compose concert music? Are you a classical pianist who wishes you could improvise? Are you a classically trained singer who wants to be prepared to sing musical theater? Are you a musician ready to move into the world of academic research? Are you fascinated by music and just want to take a few General Education courses regardless of what galaxy they are in?
