WINTER 2013 UCLA PHILHARMONIA AND UCLA SYMPHONY CONCERT SCHEDULE 

 
UCLA PHILHARMONIA is the flagship orchestra of the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. It rehearses Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:05 to 5:50 PM and performs nine full programs each year, encompassing a full spectrum of symphonic and operatic repertoire.  Please click HERE for a complete listing of the Philharmonia's programs since 2005.  Founded in 1936, Philharmonia's music directors have included Lukas Foss, Richard Dufallo, Mehli Mehta, Samuel Krachmalnick, Alexander Treger and Jon Robertson.   2012-13 marks the eighth season of Philharmonia's dynamic music director and conductor Neal Stulberg.

 Philharmonia's programming focuses on both the core symphonic and operatic repertoire, and the best in contemporary and rarely-performed works. Symphonic highlights since 2005 have included:

• a June 2008 Philharmonia performance at the Getty Center's Harold Williams Auditorium accompanying a revival of Edward Curtis' "In the Land of the Head Hunters," a groundbreaking 1914 silent film with its newly restored original score by John Braham

• Royce Hall performances of Beethoven Ninth Symphony (2008) and Haydn "Creation" (2009) with the University Chorus and Angeles Chorale

• "One Foot in the Grave," Philharmonia's first-ever, fully-costumed Halloween Royce Hall "Spooktacular" (2008)

• Philharmonia's debut appearance at the Peninsula Music Fair in Rancho Palos Verdes (2008)

• A special Royce Hall performance featuring music by Recovered Voices composers Zemlinsky, Schreker and Schoenberg, conducted by Los Angeles Opera music director James Conlon (2010)

• Philharmonia’s acclaimed April 2011 Disney Hall debut, “A Celebration of World Music.” featuring music of Arturo Marquez, A. J. Racy, Ge Ganru, James Newton and Los Camperos de Nati Cano

• Bruckner Symphony No. 4 (“Romantic”)

• Ives “Three Places in New England”

• Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 6 (“Pathétique”)

• An all-Mozart holiday concert in Royce Hall featuring the Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola (Guillaume Sutre, violin; Richard O’Neill, viola) and the Grand Mass in C Minor

• Nielsen Symphony No. 4 (“The Inextinguishable”) 

• Kenny Burrell: 80 Years Young:  A November 2011 gala 80th birthday tribute to legendary guitarist and UCLA Professor/Director of Jazz Studies Kenny Burrell, featuring Mr. Burrell, Dee Dee Bridgewater, B.B. King, Stevie Wonder, Douglas Masek, Lalo Schifrin, the UCLA Jazz Orchestra. the Los Angeles Jazz Orchestra Unlimited and the Jazz Heritage All Stars.  The orchestra was also featured in the subsequent KCET documentary, "Kenny Burrell: Jazz Master and Mentor." 

•  A January 2012 Royce Hall performance and world-premiere recording of Eric Zeisl's 1955-56 Concerto Grosso for Cello and Orchestra (Antonio Lysy, soloist) 

•  A May 2012 National Conductors Workshop sponsored by the Conductors Guild, North America’s leading service organization for conductors. 

• UCLA Philharmonia's April 2012 inaugural appearance at Santa Monica's Broad Stage

Since 2005, Philharmonia has accompanied staged UCLA Opera productions of Verdi "Falstaff," Britten "Midsummer Night's Dream," Puccini "Gianni Schicchi" and "Suor Angelica," Weill "Threepenny Opera," Mozart "Le Nozze di Figaro," Rodgers and Hammerstein "Carousel," West Coast premieres of Francesco Cavalli's "Giasone" and Jonathan Dove's "Flight," Poulenc “Dialogues des Carmélites” and Offenbach "Orpheus in the Underworld."

2012-2013 highlights include performances and the world premiere Yarlung Records recording of Eric Zeisl's "Little Symphony" and "November," performances of Strauss "Till Eulenspiegel," "Mahler Symphony No. 4," Debussy "La Mer," Copland Clarinet Concerto and Shostakovich Symphony No. 1, the eighth annual All-Star Competition, the eighth annual "Sundays Live" Bing Theater concert broadcast and an Opera UCLA double bill of Ravel "L'Enfant et les Sortilèges" and Wolf-Ferrari "Il Segreto di Susanna."

UCLA Philharmonia may be taken for credit and is composed mainly of music majors; qualified non-majors may also audition for violin, string bass, and other positions as needed. General auditions for UCLA Philharmonia are held at the beginning of fall quarter.

UCLA SYMPHONY

Founded in 2002, UCLA SYMPHONY is UCLA's campus-wide orchestra, drawing its membership from throughout the university community.
