Francisco Crespo’s research has focused on music of Mexico and Cuba, music of Latinos/as in the United States, the development of Spanish-language radio in the U.S., and the history of artistic music expressions of Amerindian and African descendants in Latin America.  He has taught university courses and lectured on Latin American music.  Born and raised in Mexico City, Crespo’s interest in music was sparked by his grandfather (a corridista during the Mexican Revolution), and his family’s summer vacations, which exposed him to music from nearly every corner of Mexico.  For more than thirty years, he has been collecting recordings (1905-1950), photographs (mostly Mexican and Cuban performers), and music instruments from all over Latin America.  In addition, he hosted weekly radio programs featuring Latin American music for a number of years.  His publications include “The Globalization of Cuban Music through Mexican Film,” in Musical Cultures of Latin America: Global Effects, Past and Present (2003), and he is a contributor to Women and Music in America since 1900: An Encyclopedia (2002).
