Morgan graduated from Smith College with a major in the Study of Women and Gender and a minor in Music. Her senior honors thesis, “Ultrasounds: Maternal Voices in the Soundscape of the Modern Horror Film,” examined the role of music in the construction of gender in horror film. She holds an MA in Women’s Studies from UCLA, and her current work focuses on the representation of identity and the construction of subjectivity in film: in particular, the use of music in marginal cinemas of the latter half of the twentieth century, including political, experimental, and exploitation of all stripes. With a musical background as a singer, Morgan also frequently writes about gender and voice in modernist art music, and tries to remain active in at least one vocal ensemble at any given moment.
