Mark Carlson, Adjunct Associate Professor in the Music Department, is veyr happy to announce that Pacific Serenades, the ensemble he founded in 1982, has been awarded a Letter of Distinction from New Music USA (the result of a merger of The American Music Center and Meet the Composer).

Meredith Monk will be given New Music USA’s Founders Award. 

Letters of Distinction, which have been awarded annually since 1964, will be given to Anthony Braxton, John Kander, John Luther Adams, Pacific Serenades andWilliam Kraft. This award recognizes those who have made a significant contribution to the field of contemporary American music. Previous recipients include George Balanchine, Leonard Bernstein, Joan Tower, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Morton Feldman, Laurie Anderson, Dizzy Gillespie, Michael Tilson Thomas, Virgil Thomson, Joan La Barbara, Randy Weston, the Kronos Quartet, Bang on a Can, Dawn Upshaw, Jack Beeson, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Copland House, William Bolcom and La Monte Young.
