Gillian Gower Bio | Print |
Gillian Gower holds a BA from Johns Hopkins University and received her MA from Hunter College of the City University of New York in 2011, where her master's thesis dealt with the depiction of the feminine in French Baroque opera. Her current research focuses on the portrayal of English queen-consorts and the Virgin Mary in sacred art and music of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

Gillian also maintains an interest in British popular music and art of the long twentieth century; she recently presented a paper at the EMP/IASPM-US joint conference entitled "Riot Culture: Beats, Banksy, and the Bristol Sound" and she is currently a Teaching Assistant for Music History 68: The Beatles. Other recent projects include an in-depth examination of the musical notation contained in the Richard and Mary Rouse Collection of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts held in the UCLA Library's Special Collections.

An accomplished and versatile singer, Gillian studied voice at the Peabody Conservatory and Mannes College and has performed at venues as diverse as New York's B.B. King Lounge and Carnegie Hall. On campus, she sings with UCLA's Early Music Ensemble. This year Gillian also serves as Co-coordinator of the Department of Musicology's Distinguished Lecture Series (http://uclamusicologydls.wordpress.com) and Assistant Editor of Echo: A Music-Centered Journal (http://echo.ucla.edu), a peer-reviewed, student-run publication.
