Oded Erez holds a BA and MA in musicology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he was also instructor in harmony at the keyboard for six semesters. Alongside his studies in musicology, he received extensive training in critical and literary theory, cultural studies and continental philosophy. His Masters thesis, titled "The Practice of Quoting Everyday life", deals with the politics of quotation in the work of HaBiluin, a rock band from Israel, and explores quotation in conjunction with the theories of Michel De Certeau and Walter Benjamin. Parts of this research were published, under the same title, in Pfohl, Jonas et al. (eds.)
Copy & Paste – meins, deins, unsers im gespräch (Shaker Verlag, 2011). His research interests include popular music, film music, gender and queer theory and Marxist theory. He presented papers on these topics in national and international conferences in Israel and Austria. In 2011, he was the initiator and co-organizer of a national interdisciplinary conference on popular music in Israel, held at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Oded participates in the UCLA Program in Experimental Critical Theory. His current research explores the influence of Greek popular music on the emergence of Musiqah Mizrahit (Israeli Mediterranean pop) in Israel in the 60's and 70's.
