January 6, 2010 Message from the Chair
Dear Students, Happy New Year! I hope you had a restful holiday and you are ready to begin winter quarter 2010. Advising As I have communicated in the past, consultation with your advisors and faculty is an important part of your academic experience. Ideally, you should meet with your faculty advisor at least twice during the quarter. When you meet during the middle of the quarter (week 6 or 7), you can discuss the courses you are planning to take before the Schedule of Classes is published (normally in week 8). The meeting at the beginning of the quarter (week 1 or 2) provides an opportunity to discuss the progress you've made during the previous quarters and to deal with other issues. For students who expect to graduate in Winter 2010 or June 2010, it is very important that you meet with your advisor at both the beginning and middle of the quarter. To ensure that you are on track, you should also take an up-to-date copy of your transcript to the meeting with your advisor. This will enable you and your advisor to determine if there are errors, and discuss how best to correct them. In addition to your faculty advisors, the Director of Undergraduate Studies, the Director of Graduate Studies, and the Department’s staff advisors are available to assist you. See below for their contact information: Director of Undergraduate Studies

History of Ethnomusicology at UCLA: 1960-2010 In 2010, we will celebrate the fifty-year history (1960-2010) of ethnomusicology at UCLA. While most people believe that ethnomusicology’s beginnings at UCLA started with the establishment of the Institute of Ethnomusicology in 1960, many may be surprised to learn that courses in non-European art music and ethnomusicology (i.e. American music, world music, and comparative musicology) were taught here almost 20 years earlier. In the coming weeks, please look out for information on this fascinating history. Security for Ethnomusicology Performance Rooms Upcoming Events Winter 2010 1.
