Message from the Chair

rees-thumb1

Dear students,

Welcome to the 2011-12 academic year! We are looking forward to exciting new classes, meeting new students and faculty, and moving toward our respective academic, career, and personal goals. Despite budget cuts and a struggling economy, the Department of Ethnomusicology is finding creative solutions to meet each challenge. We hope you will be inspired by the upcoming activities and educational opportunities available to you during fall quarter 2011. Let me know if you would like to meet with me concerning any issue: my walk-in office hours are Mondays 10-11:30am and Fridays 8-9:30am; otherwise, it’s always possible to make an appointment with chair’s assistant Ms. Donna Armstrong ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) to see me.

New Ensemble

There is a new ensemble in the department. The Charles Mingus Ensemble, directed by James Newton, which performed its debut concert in spring 2010, is now an official department ensemble (91/161Z, section 2). Students are welcome and encouraged to join. For more information go to: http://www.ethnomusic.ucla.edu/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=359:charles-mingus-ensemble&catid=87&Itemid=226

Music Industry Minor

Beginning in fall 2011, the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music will offer a Music Industry minor available to ethnomusicology, music, and music history majors. For more information about the Music Industry minor, go to http://www.ethnomusic.ucla.edu/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=853:music-industry-and-technology-at-ucla&Itemid=226

This quarter, two visiting faculty members who have taught before in the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music will return to teach courses that are now listed under the “Music Industry” heading in the Schedule of Classes. Gigi Johnson will teach Mus Ind 102 (Internet Marking and Branding for Musicians), and Don Franzen will teach Mus Ind 105 (Music and Law).

Internet Marking and Branding for Musicians: By the end of the quarter, class participants will be able to: 1) build a simple website; 2) identify and begin to gather a long-term audience around their music brand in their target market(s); 3) analyze audience size and social media environments; 4) judge and engage with future Internet technologies; and 5) build web-based marketing and production environments around their own music as well as any partner organization or musician.

Music and Law: This course covers the fundamentals of American and international law as they apply to the broad business of music, including recordings, film, television, and new media. Along with basic business practices, students will gain an understanding of legal structures and relationships within the music business.

Don Franzen is a lawyer in Beverly Hills specializing in entertainment and business law. He has lectured on entertainment law at the Eastman School of Music and the Santa Monica College Academy of Entertainment and Technology, and has published articles on legal issues in newspapers, magazines, and law journals.  He serves on the board of the Los Angeles Opera and counts among his clients leading performers in opera, orchestral music, film, and the recording industries.

Visual and Performing Arts Education Minor

Please remember that this minor is also available to ethnomusicology majors. For more information go to: http://www.arts.ucla.edu/vapae

Advising

GRADUATE STUDENTS: there are three people responsible for advising you. Throughout your time at UCLA, you need to keep in contact with staff Graduate Advisor Ms. Sandra McKerroll ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) to help you navigate the university’s red tape and make sure that you are fulfilling requirements and getting the correct paperwork done at the correct time.

The second person with whom you should stay in close contact is your faculty advisor (incoming students, I have emailed you all telling you who this is). For all graduate students, please contact your faculty advisor as soon as possible in fall quarter so you will know that you’re proceeding according to plan. Although we have mentioned meeting with advisors many times, it is worth repeating because of its importance. You should meet with your advisor at least twice each quarter. The meeting at the beginning of the quarter (week 1 or 2) is an opportunity to discuss the progress made during previous quarters and other issues. When you meet during the middle of the quarter (week 6 or 7), you can discuss the courses you plan to take before the Schedule of Classes is published (normally in week 8). It would also be helpful if you bring a copy of your transcript to the meeting so you can both review it in case there are problems.

The third person responsible for advising graduate students is the faculty Director of Graduate Studies (for 2011-2013, this is Dan Neuman [ This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ]). The DGS is available to give professional advice and assist you with professional preparation (for example, advising you when you first tackle the job market).

UNDERGRADUATES: throughout your time at UCLA, you will depend on the expertise of Mr. Al Bradley ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ), staff Undergraduate Advisor, to help you navigate the university’s administrative complexities and make sure you’re on track to graduate at the correct time. It is essential that you keep in contact with him all the time. On arrival in the department, your default faculty advisor, who is responsible for helping you with professional advising (rather than administrative) is the Director of Undergraduate Studies (for 2011-2012, this is Münir Beken: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ). As you proceed through the program, you may decide that you wish to work closely with a particular faculty member. If they agree, then you can select that person as your official faculty advisor.

Staff Changes

Some changes have occurred with regard to staff. Angela Su is no longer employed by the Departments of Ethnomusicology and Music. (She applied for and got a job elsewhere on campus.)

Adam Gilberti, Museum Scientist, now resides in Room 1642A (where Angela was) during the following hours: Mondays from 10am-4pm, Tuesdays from 11am-5pm, Wednesdays from 10am-4pm and Thursdays by appointment. Adam will take care of practice rooms, lockers, musical instruments, and keys. For more information about Adam, including contact info, click the link below:

The Main Office (2539 SMB) is changing.  Dianne Roberts, Personnel Analyst, can now be found in Room 2842 Schoenberg. Jennie Molina, Accountant, can now be found in Room 2554 Schoenberg.

Practicing your instrument

We are continuing our policy of hiring a security person for the Gamelan Room, the Near East Room, the Korea Room, and the China Room. Students can practice in these rooms only during the time that the security person is there (unless you are with your instructor). This academic year we are upping the number of practice hours from ten to twenty. Information about the hours that these rooms are available will be sent out via email and posted in the hallway.

Students who wish to use the practice rooms in the basement of Schoenberg must adhere to the “Practice Room Reservation System,” which is explained in this link: http://mfsf.music.ucla.edu/mfsf/. See Adam Gilberti for more information.

Congratulations

We are very proud of students who received awards for 2011-12 (click on link below for their names and the awards they received). I also want to congratulate students who received their B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees between fall 2010 and summer 2011. In addition, the department's sixth annual World Music Summer Institute (WMSI) was once again a major success; many thanks go to the staff, faculty, and assistants who worked hard to make this an enriching and rewarding experience for the many high school students who attended.
