JONATHAN BEARD composes, arranges, and conducts music for visual media, albums, and the concert stage, based in Los Angeles.  He received his BA in Music Composition from Stanford University in 2003, studying with Mark Applebaum and Brian Ferneyhough, and continued his studies at UCLA with Roger Bourland, David Lefkowitz, and Paul Chihara – earning his MA in 2005. Combining a unique aesthetic of symphonic depth, emotional nuance, and quirky electronics, his work can be heard across broadcast and cable television, and in both short and feature films.  Recent projects have included the score for the feature Three Days of Hamlet, which received its theatrical premiere in Los Angeles during Brit-Week festivities in May of 2011, and co-scoring Library of Dust – a documentary that continues to win jury prizes at prestigious film festivals such as SXSW, Seattle, San Francisco, and the Traverse City Film Festival.

In 2011, Jonathan completed a commission for the Pacific Symphony of Orange County, and he has received commissions and performances from an eclectic group of ensembles, including the Grammy-nominated St. Lawrence String Quartet, the Debut Orchestra, Grammy winner Vince Mendoza, and the Los Angeles Master Chorale Chamber Singers, among others.  Beyond composing, Jonathan orchestrates and arranges music for films and TV shows, such as recent projects Step Up 3D for Disney, and Nikita for the CW. He has collaborated with renowned electronic music composer Junkie XL on multiple projects, and his arrangements of music by other film composers have also been heard live in concert in Europe, Africa, and the Americas.

Jonathan remains highly committed to music education. In addition to joining the faculty of the Herb Alpert School of Music at UCLA, he sits on the Associates Board of Education Through Music - Los Angeles, and has lectured on behalf of the Pacific Symphony of Orange County, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.  Jonathan has also presented at numerous conferences, most recently delivering lectures on film scoring and electronic music production at in Seattle, Honolulu, and Los Angeles.
