This is a special year because we are celebrating 50 years of ethnomusicology at UCLA. The kick-off celebration began in May 2010 with our annual spring concert festival, and will continue with a variety of activities, including a symposium, lectures, concerts, and exhibits, through May 2011. Information about the history and significance of the 50th anniversary can be found on the Department web site. Click on link below and browse at your leisure:

Fall quarter 2010 activities are significant because many alumni will participate in the Alumni Symposium and Dinner on November 9, 2010. In addition, UCLA is hosting the 55th Annual Meeting of the Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM) at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. Prior to the meeting, on November 10, a pre-conference symposium organized in honor of Nazir Ali Jairazbhoy, the first chair of our department, will also be held at the Wilshire Grand. Hosting SEM is both an honor and a major responsibility because individuals from throughout the world will visit campus and view our facilities. If you are attending SEM, we look forward to seeing you. Also, don’t forget about the UCLA Alumni Reception at the Wilshire Grand (Los Angeles Room) on Friday, November 12, 5-7 PM.

New Faces

The department welcomes the entering graduate and undergraduate class of 2010-11.

Congratulations

We are very proud of students who received awards for 2010-11 (click on link below for their names and the awards they received). I also want to congratulate students who received their B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees between winter and summer 2010. In addition, the department's fifth annual World Music Summer Institute (WMSI) was once again a major success; many thanks go to the staff, faculty, and teaching assistants who worked hard to make this an enriching and rewarding experience for the high school students that participated.
