Ensemble History: Traditional Jazz Ensemble

| The Jazz Ensemble course was first offered during the 1971-72 academic year as Music 70R, taught by Gary Gray. A second big band was added a few years later. In 1989, Gordon Henderson began directing the two jazz ensembles, also known as Big Band Number One and Number Two. Gerald Wilson, Garnett Brown, Llew Matthews, and Charley Harrison have also directed the Number One Big Band (now called the Traditional Jazz Orchestra). Jazz ensemble instructors include: Gary Gray (1971 – 1989); Gordon Henderson (1989 – 2002); Gerald Wilson (1996 – 2004); Garnett Brown (1996- 1999); Llew Matthews (1999 – 2004); Charley Harrison (2004 - present). |
