*Note: We are currently not accepting applications for the following specializations for Fall 2013: Classical Guitar, Collaborative Piano, Jazz Performance, Organ Performance and Orchestral Conducting.
The Department of Music accepts applications for the fall quarter only. Admission to the department is based on acceptance by the UCLA Graduate Division and a faculty review of the applicant's work. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree from an acceptable institution, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 for the last two years of upper division coursework.
A major in music is not required as long as the applicant has the necessary background and musicianship to pursue graduate study. While the audition carries the most weight, the entire dossier is evaluated in making admission decisions. For further information on other requirements as well as general information on the UCLA Graduate Program in Music, the applicant should refer to Program Requirements for UCLA Graduate Degrees. Please read these instructions carefully, and review the Music Graduate Admissions Frequently Asked Questions.
STEP 1: UCLA APPLICATIONS FOR GRADUATE ADMISSION -- DUE DECEMBER 1 ONLINE The online application becomes available in September for the following fall quarter. Complete and file the UCLA Application for Graduate Admission (AGA). Do not submit supplemental requirements without completing and filing the AGA. This application will include the following: Statement of Purpose Repertoire List DMA applicants are asked to provide a scholarly/research paper on a subject in the field of music of a level of intellectual and critical engagement appropriate to graduate study. As part of the in-person audition, DMA applicants will be asked to spend 30-45 minutes writing an extemporaneous essay on a musical topic we will pose to you. The question will be extremely general and requires no advance preparation. This will simply provide us with one more measure of your writing skills when we evaluate your application. NOTE: Applicants for the MM in Jazz Performance apply first to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance prior to applying to UCLA. Applicants who pass the pre-screening review will be invited to audition at UCLA.
STEP 2: MM DMA SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS - DUE DECEMBER 1 (received, not postmarked) Music Department Graduate Application Cover Sheet (PDF) Official Transcripts: In addition to uploading unofficial transcripts to the UCLA Application for Graduate Admission, one official transcript from all colleges and universities attended must be mailed to the department. International applicants, please submit one official transcript, degree certificate and/or diploma. All documents must bear the actual seal and/or signature of the Registrar. Photocopies are not accepted. Do not send the original of an academic record which cannot be replaced; obtain a properly certified copy instead. All transcripts and credentials are evaluated by the UCLA Graduate Admissions Office in terms of UCLA equivalency. More information about Requirements for International Applicants can be found on the Graduate Division website. You may submit the transcripts yourself, or have the institution send them directly to the department. International Students - TOEFL or IELTS: Students with English as a second language must receive a TOEFL score of 560 (paper-based test) or 220 (computer-based test) or an IELTS score of 7.0. For the internet-based TOEFL (TOEFL iBT), the minimum total passing score is 87. Please see UCLA Graduate Division - English Requirements. Because processing, sending, and receiving TOEFL scores often takes several weeks, international students must schedule the TOEFL examination no later than October in order to meet the Departmental deadlines. These test scores must be received by the Dec 1 deadline in order to be given full consideration for admission and scholarship. International Students seeking F1 or J1 visas: The UCLA "Financial Statement for Students Seeking Non-Immigrant Visas" must be received in the department by March 1. Please visit UCLA Graduate Division -- Visa Procedures/Financial Verification for more details and to download the form.
AUDITION: Please prepare an audition program. REPERTOIRE LISTS 2013 AUDITION DATES Conducting, Piano, and Voice only: Pre-screening CD/DVD For these three areas, a pre-screening CD DVD is required by the department, due December 1 Mark your CD/DVD clearly with your full name, degree, and year: Please ensure that your CD/DVD is compatible with both Mac and PC systems, and do not edit or enhance the recording in any way. Your CD/DVD must also be accompanied by a cover sheet that gives the following information: Name as it appears on the UC application. Degree for which you are applying. Repertoire you are presenting. Conducting - Organization being conducted and your connection to that organization. Comments you wish to make about this video or the recording session. Pre-screening CD/DVDs will be reviewed by the department faculty and the most promising candidates will be invited to audition in person on UCLA's campus in late January/early February. We will accept a CD/DVD audition from an applicant to the MM degree; however, please bear in mind that you can always present yourself better live than in a recording. For the DMA, we strongly prefer that you audition in person. To request an exception to this, we require that you make your request to the department at least one month before the audition date. Conducting -- DVD required. Conducting applicants are required to submit a rehearsal DVD of at least 15 minutes for preliminary screening by December 1. We accept applications in orchestral, choral and wind conducting--you may not apply for more than one. The DVD will be reviewed by the conducting faculty and the most promising candidates may be invited to interview in person on the UCLA campus. If you are invited to interview in person, you will be informed of the possible dates and any audition repertoire requirements at that time. Orchestral Conducting: FAQ for orchestral conducting. Choral Conducting: Please contact Don Neuen, Choral Studies Director Wind Conducting: Please contact Gordon Henderson, Director of Bands.
