Published: June 28, 2010

The UCLA Charles Mingus Large Ensemble performed on May 24 in the Schoenberg Courtyard with students from both the jazz and classical disciplines. The ensemble is directed by Professor James Newton.  This concert surveyed the compositions of Los Angeles composer/bassist, Charles Mingus, an important figure in twentieth-century avant-garde American music. UCLA's Charles Mingus Large Ensemble incorporates many of the unique ensemble practices found in Mingus' music, spanning pre-jazz to Free Jazz.
