UCLA Department of Music Session A: June 21 – July 30
Music 1A Fundamentals of Music MTWR 9:00-10:00 am
4 units. Designed for non-music majors. P/NP or letter grading. 1A. Introduction to elements of music: pitch and rhythm symbols, meter and time signatures, notation, scales, intervals, and chord structure.
Music 7 Understanding Movie Music TR 11:00 am -12:50 pm 4 units. Lecture, four hours; outside study, eight hours. Musical experience helpful, but not required. Brief historical survey of film music, with strong emphasis on recent development: Japanese animation, advertising, and MTV, as well as computer tools and digital scoring methods. Designed to inspire and inform those interested in movie music. Offered in summer only. P/NP or letter grading.
Music 15 Art of Listening MWF 10:00 am-12:00 pm
5 units. Acquisition of listening skills through direct interaction with live performance, performers, and composers. Relationship of listening to theoretical, analytical, historical, and cultural frameworks. Music as aesthetic experience and cultural practice. P/NP or letter grading.
Music Beginning Keyboard Sect. 1--MWF 9:00 – 10:20 am Cindy Tseng, Instructor 4 units. Simple keyboard skills together with basic aspects of music theory and its practical application to keyboard: sight-reading, tonality, chords, scales, cadences, simple compositions, and improvisations. Offered in summer only. P/NP or letter grading.
Music Beginning Guitar Sect. 1--MWF 10:00 am – 11:20pm Brandon Mayer, Instructor 4 units. Introduction to guitar techniques, accompanying, and arranging for the instrument; coverage of note reading and tablature. Offered in summer only. P/NP or letter grading.
Music Vocal Technique for Beginners Sect. 1--TRF 1:00 - 2:20 pm
4 units. Preparation: advanced experience and accomplishment in serious composition (art music), two years of music theory. Limited to music composition majors. Exercises in electroacoustic orchestration, meta-pitch composition, notation software (Sibelius), sequencing and film scoring software (Logic), text collages (ProTools), and final project. May be concurrently scheduled with course C226. P/NP or letter grading. Consent of Instructor required--enrollment after first class.
Session C: August 2 – September 10 Music Beginning Keyboard Sect. 3--MWF 9:00 – 10:20 am Sanaz Rezai, Instructor
4 units. Simple keyboard skills together with basic aspects of music theory and its practical application to keyboard: sight-reading, tonality, chords, scales, cadences, simple compositions, and improvisations.
