Shelina Brown is currently working on a Dissertation project that examines proto-punk musical experimentalism in the late 1960s and early 1970s.  Focusing primarily on Yoko Ono’s contributions to vocal experimentation in avant-rock and underground music, Shelina’s proposed thesis project will delve into an exploration of women’s subversive vocal practices in the latter half of the 20th century.  Shelina holds a BA Honors in Music and Comparative Literature and an MA in Comparative Literature from the University of Alberta, Canada. Her MA Thesis involved a genealogical inquiry into the development of Japanese enka song throughout the 20th century. Research interests include: feminist theory, psychoanalysis, Marxist theory, the history of Japanese popular song since the Meiji Restoration, premodern and modern Japanese literature, Japanese feminist theory, punk rock and the post-1960s avant-garde. Her article entitled “Shout From the Heart: Yoko Ono’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Revolution” will be published in the June 2012 installment of the journal, Volume, edited by Sheila Whitely.
