UCLA was well represented at the 40th International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM) World Conference that was held at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa, July 1-8, 2009. This was the first time that ICTM has had a meeting on the African continent since the 1960s when a conference convened at the University of Ghana in 1966.

The nine UCLA alumni who either made presentations or attended the meeting included: Lois Anderson, Barbara Hampton, David Harnish, Jean K. Kidula, Cynthia Kimberlin, Mwesa Mapoma, Eddie Meadows (UCLA post doc), Don Niles, Cynthia Schmidt, and Brian Schrag. The four UCLA faculty who were in attendance included Munir Beken, Jacqueline Cogdell DjeDje, Timothy Rice, and Anthony Seeger. (See photos below).
