INSTRUMENT / EQUIPMENT LIABILITY

The University of California assumes no liability for the loss of or damage to student or faculty instruments or equipment, either on or off the campus. It is the responsibility of the student or faculty member to make sure his/her instruments are insured. This could be through a homeowner’s policy or a specific policy for the instrument.

INSTRUMENT PURCHASES 

All instrument purchases must be approved by the chair in writing. Before making any purchases, please obtain a Request for Goods and Services form from This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. USE OF INSTRUMENTS FOR PRACTICE

World Music instruments
Ethnomusicology Department instruments are part of a special collection and are extremely difficult or impossible to replace. Therefore they cannot be checked out for practice purposes. Students who are enrolled in 91/161B (Music of Bali), 91/161D (Music of China), 91/161F (Music of India), or 91/161J (Music of Korea), may use the instruments in class under the supervision of the instructor or during specified practice times under the supervision of a hired security person in the ethnomusicology performance rooms (1822, 1842, 1846, 1659). The rooms otherwise remain locked. Faculty who teach in the ethnomusicology performance rooms may obtain an omnilock code (for access) from This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Jazz instruments

You need JavaScript enabled to view it keeps a collection of jazz instruments in Room B413 Schoenberg Music Building, available for check-out by those who participate in the jazz ensembles.  This includes instruments such as baritone saxophones, bass clarinets, and alto flute.  Adam also assists students or faculty who need concert percussion other than drum kits (e.g. vibraphone, marimba, timpani). 

INSTRUMENT REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE

BORROWING INSTRUMENTS

The ethnomusicology instrument collection includes instruments that are used on a regular basis by the department’s ensembles. Students cannot borrow the instruments. RECORDING EQUIPMENT

MUSIC STANDS

Music stands are not to be removed from Schoenberg Music Building without the permission of someone in the Technical Services Office, 1309 SMB.

Practice, teaching, and performance pianos are a most important resource and it is necessary that all members of our musical community help to keep these expensive instruments in the best condition possible. The Department of Music piano tuner-technician will do his best to keep the instruments in good repair. However, we need the eyes and ears of everyone to keep him aware of piano tuning and repair needs. Report out-of-tune pianos and piano repair needs immediately to the Technical Services Office, 1309 SMB, in writing. Be specific in your complaint so that the tuner-technician can get right to the business of solving the problem.

GUIDELINES FOR CONCERT PIANO USE 

Regulations for all pianos:

- Each piano is to be kept covered, locked (if equipped) and stored in the mezzanine or wing area of Schoenberg Hall or the wing area of Popper Theater.

-Faculty must give students permission to use a piano and /or schedule special usage with the Technical Services office.

- Keys to unlock either padlock on the Popper piano are available in the Technical Services Office.

-These pianos may not be moved to other rooms or facilities.

-Prior to scheduled events and rehearsals that feature or otherwise include a piano, allow 1 to 2 hours for tuning and/or associated repairs.

The Concerto Steinway Concert Grand ("GOLD") in Schoenberg Hall

- Reserved for faculty, guest artists, concerto performance, piano recitals, and master classes.

- Two hours rehearsal time is allotted for each recital, if available.

- May not be used as a prepared piano.

The Performance Steinway concert Grand ("EBONY") in Schoenberg Hall

- May be used for all other performances other than the ones described above.

- May not be used as a prepared piano.

- May not be used as a practice piano. Two hours rehearsal time allotted, if available.

- Used for concert accompaniment functions.

The Classroom Steinway Concert Grand ("IVORY") in Schoenberg Hall

- Used for classes and rehearsal

- May be used as a prepared piano within Technical Services guidelines.

The Steinway performance piano (locked) in Jan Popper Theater

- Used for competitions, concerts, and master classes.

- May not be used as a prepared piano.

- Two hours rehearsal time is allotted for each recital, if available.

- May not be used as a practice piano.

The several university pipe organs may only be used by faculty or those students studying organ through the Department of Music.
