PROGRAM

Can you do a double major in Ethnomusicology and a second major?

Freshman applicants admitted to Ethnomusicology may petition for second major once they have met certain prerequisites for both.  Transfer students are allowed if they can do so within certain unit limitations.

Can you minor in Ethnomusicology?

We do not offer a minor in Ethnomusicology at this time. However, a Visual and Performing Arts Education (VAPAE) minor is offered through the School of the Arts and Architecture and a Music Industry minor is offered through the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.

If admitted to the World Music concentration, can you take jazz courses?

Students concentrating in World Music can audition for large jazz ensembles and small jazz combos. However, only currently-enrolled jazz majors can take private lessons in jazz.

AUDITION

What is the difference in the audition for the Ethnomusicology World Music concentration and the Jazz Studies concentration?

Applicants for the World Music concentration are allowed to audition on any musical instrument and perform any style of music, western or traditional.  Jazz Studies applicants are required to perform an audition on an eligible jazz instrument, and their audition must emphasize jazz repertoire.

Are you allowed to audition for both World Music and Jazz Studies?

Only applicants who are capable of auditioning at an advanced level of jazz performance will be approved for Jazz Studies.  If you truly feel you are capable and interested in both areas, the department will consider scheduling an audition for both.

If I am unable to attend the audition on my scheduled date, can I reschedule for another date?

Auditions are extremely difficult to reschedule.  If you have a conflict with your assigned audition date, please contact the department immediately.

Does UCLA provide accompaniment for my audition?

No, should you require live accompaniment, please make private arrangements.  If you are bringing recorded accompaniment, CD and DVD players will be available for your use at the audition.

APPLICATION AND ADMISSION DECISIONS

Do you need to be able to read music to get accepted?

Some ability to read and understand music notation is expected.

Do Ethnomusicology applicants have to take a music theory exam?

Music theory placement examinations are given to accepted students only, during their summer orientation before fall quarter.  The music theory exam is 90% listening; you will be asked to identify and complete melodic and harmonic dictations, and identify key signatures.
