Laith Ulaby, a specialist in the music traditions of the Arab Persian Gulf, finished his Phd in Ethnomusicology at UCLA in 2008. He has also conducted research in many other Arabic speaking countries including, Syria, Egypt, Morocco and Yemen. Ulaby has a wide range of theoretical interests such as cultural policy, performance context, and music in urban spaces. He has taught seminars and lectures at UCLA and the University of Redlands and works as a freelance musician in Los Angeles.
