The UCLA Department of Ethnomusicology grants the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in the following concentrations:

  • Jazz Studies (performance / composition)
  • World Music (performance / composition / public ethnomusicology / scholarly research)

 

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

The UCLA Department of Ethnomusicology admits new students in the Fall Quarter only.  The UC application filing period is November 1st–30 for enrollment in September of the following year.

Applicants must first apply for admission at the freshman level from high school or transfer from another college or university, and must meet all minimum academic eligibility requirements for admission to the University of California either as a freshman or transfer student.  For more information on UC eligibility, please visit the University of California website.

Please note that only applicants who have indicated Ethnomusicology as their first choice major to UCLA on the general UC application, will be considered for admission to the program.

SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS

In addition to the UC application, all applicants to the UCLA Department of Ethnomusicology are required to submit a supplemental application via online upload. Upon receipt of the UC application, all applicants will be contacted by the department via email with a prompt for supplemental materials. Supplemental materials are due to the department by January 11th, 2013.

Questionnaire/ Personal Statement / Unofficial Transcripts - Required of all applicants.

Audition - Required of all applicants.

Letters of Recommendation – Two (2) required of all applicants.

Auditions are scheduled by instrument over several weekend dates in late January/early February.  The department will send specific audition appointment information to applicants directly upon receipt of their UC application.

 

AUDITION DATES

Auditions for both Jazz Studies and World Music will be held on campus:

 Saturday, February 2, 2013 - Jazz Studies and World Music

Saturday, February 9, 2013 - Jazz Studies only

 After receipt of the supplemental application, students will be emailed with their assigned audition day and appointment time by January 18, 2013.

Applicants may audition in person or submit an audition recording.  Applicants who reside within a 200-mile radius of UCLA are required to audition on campus.  All applicants are strongly encouraged to audition in person if at all possible.

Students are accepted into the department based upon evidence of creative talent and academic achievement.  A faculty committee recommends admission decisions.  Successful candidates will also have met minimum academic eligibility requirements for the University of California.

Freshman applicants are notified in March of their admission status; transfer applicants receive notification in April.
