Instructional Support (OID)

The Office of Instructional Development (OID) supports the instructional mission of the University and enhances teaching and learning opportunities through programs and services which promote the use of current and emerging instructional methodologies and technologies.

Some services provided through OID:

INSTRUCTIONAL IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM

The Instructional Improvement Program provides grants to support major faculty, department and college-initiated projects that enhance curricular development and instructional improvement of undergraduate offerings. Services provided are:

Mini-Grants Program:
Mini-grants up to $750.00 per academic year are provided for small-scale projects which improve or enrich existing undergraduate courses. This includes honoraria to distinguished experts visiting undergraduate classes. ($150.00 maximum per visiting speaker.) See Guest Performers/Lecturers in Course Preparation for further information.

Instructional Improvement Grants:
This grant program offers larger grants to faculty on an annual basis to encourage and reward faculty creativity and innovation in undergraduate instruction. Applications are due annually on March 15. Special emphases are given to projects which fall within the following general categories:

- Multidisciplinary/interdepartmental courses and programs;

- New or revised programs of study;

- Multi-cultural studies;

- Special honoraria from distinguished visiting experts to reach upper-division courses not formally offered;

- Pilot GE course clusters

- Technology-enhanced instruction.

INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA LIBRARY

The Instructional Media Library is the University’s central resource for the collection and maintenance of educational and instructional media, and is authorized to clear or license video materials for use in the classroom. More than 5,200 titles make up the collection, which may be searched in ORION (see UCLA Libraries and Computer Services).

INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA LABORATORY

The Instructional Media Laboratory provides individual student and small group access to course-related interactive and videotape programs. Students assigned by faculty to study specific supplementary materials may learn at their own pace.

AUDIO VISUAL SERVICES

Audio Visual Services (AVS) provides media equipment, technical consultation including use of the classroom network, operators, delivery and training services designed to support classroom instruction and University-related events. Inventory includes a variety of audio and video systems, projectors, laptop computers and permanent classroom equipment. To order equipment, contact Julia Yang, 2539 SMB, 825-4766 or Martha Rider, 2539 SMB, 825-4767. Please make all orders at least 3 days in advance, to insure proper lead time.

INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA PRODUCTION

Instructional Media Production offers comprehensive consultation in instructional and graphic design, with production capabilities for all types of audio, video and multimedia products.

TEST SCORING SERVICES

The Evaluation of Instruction Program (part of OID) provides a variety of test scoring services that are available to all UCLA Instructors. The overall goal of the test scoring service is to provide an efficient and accurate means of grading multiple-choice exams that will effectively generate reports to suit the instructor's needs. Such reports should be used by instructors to improve the testing process itself.

TEACHING ENHANCEMENT CENTER

The Teaching Enhancement Center assists UCLA Faculty in developing instructional multimedia presentations by providing equipment, software and training from experienced consultants. By providing a place for Faculty to learn and to use technologies, professors (or their GSRs) have successfully completed projects scanning 35-mm slides, creating PowerPoint presentations which incorporate graphics, video, or audio for classroom use, creating CD-based courseware, or converting video or audio into digital formats for use on a website or in class.

CENTER FOR COMMUNITY LEARNING

Administered by the Division of Honors and Undergraduate Programs of the College, The Center for Community Learning and Service assists students, faculty, and academic departments in developing meaningful learning experiences outside the classroom. These may be in the form of student internships, field studies or research, community service, or cooperative education programs.

CENTER FOR COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS (UCLA in LA)

The Center for Community Partnerships is committed to connecting our faculty, students, and staff with the communities beyond our campus through the exchange of ideas and resources. Annually, the Center offers funding on a competitive basis for proposed partnerships between UCLA faculty and/or professional staff, and non-profit organizations in Los Angeles. One program provides funds to UCLA faculty or professional staff working with local non-profit organizations; the second makes funds available directly to Los Angeles 501(c)3 non-profits working with UCLA faculty and staff.
