Music of Brazil Ensemble

The Music of Brazil Ensemble (Ethnomusicology 91/161Z, section 2) features Afro-Brazilian percussion that is common throughout Brazil’s major cities. In the 20 th century, blocos and escolas de samba (samba schools) began to emerge from urban centers marking a significant presence in Brazil’s yearly Carnaval celebrations. As community-based groups, the baterias (drums ensembles) became an important part of the socio-political landscape of Brazil’s urban poor.

The ensemble’s repertory incorporates the various styles including samba batucada in the tradition of Rio de Janeiro’s samba schools, samba reggae and samba afro of the blocos-afros of Salvador da Bahia and the maracatu of Recife, Pernambuco among others.
