Advising
To start the year, I encourage you to meet with your advisors to make sure you are on track and making progress toward the degree.
As I have stated in past communications, consultation with advisors and other faculty is an important part of your academic experience. Ideally, you should meet with your advisor at least twice during the quarter. When you meet during the middle of the quarter (week 6 or 7), you can discuss the courses that you are planning to enroll in before the Schedule of Classes is published (normally in week 8). The meeting at the beginning of the quarter (week 1 or 2) provides an opportunity to discuss the progress you've made during the previous quarters and to deal with other issues. For students who expect to graduate in Winter 2008 or June 2008, it is especially important that you meet with your advisor at the beginning and middle of the quarter.

Lecture by Beverley Diamond

Beverley Diamond is an ethnomusicologist recognized for her research on Native music cultures in North America. She holds the position of Canada Research Chair in Traditional Music/Ethnomusicology at Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada. Her presentation is co-sponsored by the Department of Ethnomusicology and the Department of Musicology. More details about the lecture will be provided later .
The Seventh Annual Korean Music Symposium and Concert
Wednesday, February 13, 2008
On February 13, two activities of the Seventh Annual Korean Music Symposium will take place at UCLA: a seminar, from 12:00 to 5:00 PM, in the Gamelan Room (SMB 1629), and a concert at 7:00 PM in Popper Theater (SMB 1200). On February 16, a fundraising concert will be held at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles (Korea Town). Forty musicians and scholars from Korea are planning to attend the seminar and both concerts.

2008 World Music Summer Institute
The Department's Annual World Music Summer Institute (WMSI) will be held June 22-28, 2008. Performance courses on the Music of African Americans, the Music of Brazil, the Music of Korea, and the Music of Mexico will be taught.
