Happy New Year!

I hope you had a restful break and are eager to start the new year. As a beginning, I strongly recommend that you meet with your faculty advisor early in the quarter (rather than later). Faculty are eager to assist you in making decisions about courses and plans for the future. So don't fail to take advantage of this important resource. If you do not know the name of your faculty advisor, please contact Al Bradley or Anna Laven.

For Winter 2006, several events have been scheduled. To continue our celebration of the Year of African-American Music, New Orleans blues pianist Henry Butler will be the department's Regents Lecturer http://www.ethnomusic.ucla.edu/newsevents/upevents.htm. He will be in residence from Tuesday, February 21 to Friday, March 3. In addition to other activities, he will present a public lecture at the Fowler Museum on Tuesday, February 28 at 5 PM, and will be featured in a concert in Jan Popper Theater on Friday, March 3 at 7 PM.

In addition, several other events will take place.
On February 8-10, the Fifth Annual Korean Music Symposium will be held.

On Friday, February 24, Henry Stobart, an Andean specialist and senior lecturer in ethnomusicology at the University of London, will present a lecture in the Ethnomusicology Archive at 5 PM.

On Monday and Tuesday, March 13 and 14, jazz concerts featuring UCLA students will be held in Schoenberg Hall at 7 PM.

For more details about all of these events, see http://www.ethnomusic.ucla.edu/newsevents/upevents.htm.

Something new!!
As part of the Department of Ethnomusicology's 2006 summer program, a World Music Summer Institute (WMSI) is planned for June 25 to July 1, 2006, with three performance courses being offered: Music of African Americans (Ethnomu 91P), Music of Korea (Ethnomu 91J), and Music of Mexico (Ethnomu 91P). Faculty and staff are excited about this new venture because it will allow the department to expose world music to local, national, and international students who may not have the opportunity to experience these traditions.

Although individuals of all ages are welcome, we are especially interested in attracting students in high school and community colleges. Therefore, please spread the word and tell people to visit the web site http://www.summer.ucla.edu/institutes/WorldMusic/overview.htm. If our first attempt is successful, we will be able to offer courses of a similar nature in the future.

If you would like to serve as a dormitory counselor in the Institute (a paid position), please contact me as soon as possible. In addition to earning some extra money, this will enable you to interact and share your experiences with individuals who will be enthusiastic and eager to learn about world music and ethnomusicology.

Finally, please don't forget to send Donna news about your achievements and activities so they can be posted on the department web site.

Good luck! I hope you have a successful and stimulating quarter.
