Dear Students,
With the arrival of spring quarter, the end of the academic year is in sight. Before you become busy with classes, completing projects, and participating in the many activities that normally occur during spring, I strongly encourage you to meet with your advisors. In fact, it is a good idea to have consultations with them at least twice each quarter: at the beginning (in the first or second week) and toward the end (in the seventh or eighth week). Interactions with faculty and advisors improve time to degree because you gain invaluable advice about career plans, and can discuss and review your progress in the program.
Spring quarter is also a time for concerts and other events. In the following, I highlight activities taking place in spring and summer 2007 and invite your participation.
Searches
1. The interview process for the new faculty search will take place in spring quarter. As I indicated in my winter 2007 message, the faculty would greatly appreciate input from all students about applicants. So please stay alert for information about campus visits and talks.
2. For your information, the search for a new Ethnomusicology Archive Librarian closed with no hire. The department plans to conduct a new search in summer and fall 2007. Fortunately, Phoebe Nelson, who is serving as Interim Archivist, has agreed to remain with us until we find a permanent replacement.
New Faces
1. The department welcomes Allyn Miner, who will teach two courses this spring quarter:
Classical Music of India, Ethnomu 147

History in Ethnomusicology, Ethnomu 188/292A

Dr. Miner is visiting from the University of Pennsylvania, where she teaches in the Department of South Asia Studies. Her appointment at UCLA is made possible through funding provided by the Mohindar Brar Sambhi Chair in Indian Music. For more information about Dr. Miner, please go the following link:

2. Several people have resigned and/or retired, and we wish them much success in their new ventures. As a result of these vacancies, the department has hired several replacements:
In Winter 2007, Umberto Belfiore was hired as the new recording technician for the Ethnomusicology and Music Departments. He replaces Jeff Richmond who retired in August 2006. http://www.ethnomusic.ucla.edu/people/staff.htm
Julia Yang was hired in March 2007 as the new accounting assistant for the Ethnomusicology and Music Departments. She replaces Jennie Molina who resigned in February 2007 to accept another position in the university.

Effective March 29, 2007, Kelly Salloum resigned from her position as director of UCLA Ethnomusicology Publications and the department’s events coordinator. Until a permanent person is hired, Kathleen Hood will serve as interim director of publications and events coordinator. http://www.ethnomusic.ucla.edu/people/staff.htm
Events
1. Public Lecture
A public lecture by Allyn Miner will take place on Friday, May 11, 2007, at 3:00 PM in the Gamelan Room; a reception will follow.
2. Spring Festival of World Music and Jazz
The department's annual spring concert series featuring our world music and jazz performance ensembles begins May 17 and ends June 5. All concerts will take place in Schoenberg Hall and begin at 7 PM.
3. Ethnomusicology Undergraduate Student Organization (EUSO)
Continuing the momentum created with the Alumni night that took place in Winter 2007, the undergraduates are planning World Music Stock. Details are forthcoming.
4. The department's second annual World Music Summer Institute (WMSI) will take place June 24 to 30, 2007. If you know of individuals who will benefit from such an experience, please inform them about this activity. Students who participated in summer 2006 report that it was a wonderful enriching experience. In addition, the department is looking for students who would like to serve as dorm counselors for WMSI. All expenses are paid and there is a stipend. If you are interested, please contact me.
