Dear Students,
At UCLA, the Spring quarter is often bulging with activities, and
Spring 2006 is no different.
For those involved in major milestones and transitions (completing
the B.A., M.A. or Ph.D.; taking the doctoral qualifying exams; defending
the Ph.D. topic proposal or dissertation, etc.), we understand if you
need to hibernate because these can be stressful times. So we wish
you the best.
For students involved in other activities (studying for classes, taking
exams, writing papers, performing in ensembles, participating in
departmental activities, etc.), your quarter will also be busy. We wish
much success as well.
To ensure a good start for the quarter, I strongly urge you (undergrads
and graduate students) to meet with your faculty advisor. Because the
faculty are here to assist you, they are often surprised that few students
visit them. So don't wait until there is a problem. I recommend an
appointment before the quarter ends.
Plans for the department's World Music Institute (WMI) continue. If you
know of individuals who will benefit from such an experience, please do
not hesitate to let them know. Full and partial scholarships are available
(click on the link for "fees" on the WMI web site to obtain more details) <http://www.summer.ucla.edu/institutes/WorldMusic/overview.htm>
I invite you to take advantage of the many activities occurring in Spring.
As usual, activities abound in many areas (see below for just a few).
All performances are free. For more details, see the department web site: <http://www.ethnomusic.ucla.edu/newsevents/upevents.htm>

In April and May, several of our ensembles will be performing in the Fowler
Out Loud! performance series at the Fowler Museum on Thursdays at 6 PM.
Ethnomusicology Undergraduate Student Organization (EUSO)
Continuing the momentum created with the hosting of a workshop by the
Peru Negro ensemble in Popper Theater in Winter 2006, the undergraduates
are planning several activities in Spring 2006.
a. VIBE potluck
This will be an approximately 2 hour event that will take place in the
Schoenberg Courtyard on the evening of Friday, April 21 (7-9 PM), the
Friday of 3rd week spring quarter. The organizers are hoping that all
ethnomusicology affiliates -- undergraduate and graduate students,
faculty, and staff -- will attend.
b. Undergraduate Conference
EUSO has sent out a call for papers for a cross-disciplinary conference
that will take place on Saturday, May 20, 2006, in Schoenberg. This is
a new initiative for our undergraduates that we hope everyone in the
department will support. As this activity develops, you will receive more
information.
I wish you a very successful Spring Quarter.
Best wishes,
J.C. DjeDje
