Music of Ghana Ensemble

Syllabus

Course Description: Ethnomusicology 91 is for beginning students and 191E is for more advanced students.

Requirements: There are no required books to purchase, however, students will be asked to read selected articles on the subjects talked about in class

“Life becomes dance and dance becomes life. We cannot fully understand the music of any tribe without knowing something about its dances.”

Objective: This course is designed to teach student’s indigenous African music and dances. It is expected that the course will expose students to the various functions of music and dances in the life cycle of African societies.

The following repertoire is primarily Ghanaian, but other West African cultures are also represented:

Adowa-Akan
Kpanlogo-Ga
Bamaya-Dagbani
Kundum-Nzema and Ahanta
Bawa-Dargati
Takai-Dagomba
Eseni-Ijaw, Nigeria
Atsia-Ewe
Agahu-Egun, Benin
Gota- Fon, Benin
Adzogbo/Adzohu-Fon, Benin

Attendance: This course is not a music appreciation or art appreciation class. It is a practical course, therefore, all students are expected to attend every class and stay for the duration of the class. Students who do not attend regularly may find themselves seriously hampered in executing movements in our concert(s) since the dances learned in class are essential for it. Your final grade will also be affected by your attendance, so please make this class a priority. If you have too many conflicts do not sign up for this class
