Course description:
There are as many as thirty to thirty five different types of gamelan ensembles in Bali. In this course the instruction will focus on the grand, modern, and most popular gamelan orchestra in Bali and in the world, which is called Gamelan Gong Kebyar. Gamelan (literally means “orchestra”) and kebyar (literally means lightning or sudden burst), is the most influential genre of twentieth century music, developed on the Indonesian island of Bali. Gamelan music is actively learned, performed and composed in Bali as well as globally. Its repertoire is large and growing; some were composed for instrumental pieces, as accompaniment for dance and theatrical forms. In this class, the students will learn how to play all different instruments such as gangsa types (metallophone), kendang (drum), and reong (a rowed small kettle gong) and suling (bamboo flute).
