Course description:
There are as many as thirty to thirty five different types of gamelan ensembles in Bali. The ensembles vary in size, from quartet of gender wayang (the accompaniment of Balinese shadow play) ensemble to 40 musicians required for playing the gamelan gong gede (great court orchestra). In this course the instruction will focus on the basic technique of how to play the gamelan Gong Kebyar, the most modern and popular gamelan in Bali.(Gamelan is the generic Indonesian word for orchestra). The students will also learn a few gamelan pieces.
The instrumentation of the gamelan Gong Kebyar divided into three main categories:
1) melodic instruments are metallophones of the gansa types: flute and rebab (two-stringed bowed spike lute).
2) Rhythmic instruments, called kendang
3) Many different sizes of gongs.

Attendance:
The student is expected to attend every class for the entire semester.
Grade:
Grading will be based upon attendance, motivation, effort, and participation in the performance, which will be announced by the instructor in advance. |
