Course Description

The purpose of this class is to introduce students to the discipline of ethnomusicology, including its history, core research methods, and current issues of importance in the field.  Although many of you have chosen ethnomusicology as a major based upon your interests in music performance, it is important to remember that focal point of ethnomusicology is research, and that the term itself means “the study of music and culture,” and not  “the performance of non-western instruments or vocal traditions.”  This course is a mixture of lecture, discussion, and student projects and presentations.
