Ethnomusicology 10B: World Music Theory

Syllabus

This course is intended to provide ethnomusicology undergraduate majors with the rudiments of music theory in a variety of musical systems and prepare them for higher-level theory and analysis courses. Students will have the opportunity to develop their skills in basic musical analysis and musicianship, such as ear training, solfege, and melodic and rhythmic dictation.
Grading and course requirements:

Mid-term Exam I 15%

Mid-term Exam II 15%

Attendance 10%

Homework 10%

Quizzes 10%

Final Project 10%

Final Exam 30%
Midterm exams will be given during the fourth and eighth weeks of the quarter. Dictation quizzes occur every Monday at the beginning of class. Students arriving more than fifteen minutes late on Monday will not have a chance to make up the quiz for that week. The weekly schedule and due dates for class assignments will be posted weekly on the website.
A half-grade will be deducted from late class assignments. A whole grade will be deducted from assignments received later than a week from the due date.
Students are expected to come prepared to every class meeting. This means bringing the textbook, staff paper, and class assignments to all classes. No make-up exams are given for any reason other than illness (with doctor's note), family death, citizenship interview/ceremony (with documentation and prior notification of the instructor or T.A.), other court appearance (with documentation), car breakdown (with mechanic’s report), or religious holiday (if a religious holiday falls on an exam date, you need to let me know as soon as possible, no later than two weeks beforehand, so that a make up exam can be scheduled)
