Syllabus

Purpose and Objectives: These courses are to teach students basic and intermediate techniques of traditional Chinese music instruments, folk dance, folk song, opera, and their cultural significance. Each student should focus on one particular instrument or genre of the music. In the end of the quarter, students are expected to be able to play the assigned music on their selected instruments, master the dance movements, sing folk song(s), or aria of the traditional opera prescribed in the beginning of the class.

Assignments:  Each student will have four assignment-tests during the course. Individual practice is vital for mastering basic performing techniques taught in this class. After each individual lesson, the student is expected to have at least 3 hours of practice per week. Also, to help students better understand the instruments and the music; additional listening and reading material may be assigned as the course proceeds.

Final exam:  This course has no final exams; however, each student will be required to participate in the final class concert. One or more public performances may be arranged for extra credit.

Grading:

     

Attendance 40 points (40%)
Assignments 40 points  (40%)
Final performance 20 points (20%)
Total: 100 points (100%)

The attendance portion of the grade will be based on the scale below. There are no excused absences. There are no makeup assignments.

Gamelan Room Rules

  1. Do not bring food or drink into the Gamelan Room
  2. Do not move instruments without permission from the ensemble director or TA
  3. Chairs must be re-stacked at the end of class
The whole class is expected to participate in post-
  1. class/post-concert clean up
  2. Many of the instruments in the Gamelan Room are sacred instruments. Please treat them with great care and respect. (To be safe, don’t touch or go near instruments that you do not use for this class)

The following behaviors are unacceptable and will negatively affect the class participation portion of your grade, at the sole discretion of the instructor.

  • Late arrival to class
  • Leaving class before it is over
  • Unnecessary talking and disruptive behavior
  • Eating, chewing gum, doing homework
  • Turn off all cell phones, pagers, and other devices
  • Playing your instrument/singing when you should not
