Music of Bali Ensemble

Syllabus

Course Description:
In Bali there is a bewildering diversity of musical genres. As many as 30 different types and sizes of musical ensembles (gamelans) have been developed for many centuries. This course will focus on technique and serve as a practical introduction to playing the musical instruments belonging to the ensemble called Gamelan Gong Kebyar (the most modern ensemble in Bali).

It is expected that all students will be learning to play several different gendings (musical compositions). Furthermore, the course is aiming to provide students with a good foundation for future studies of playing gamelan.

There is a textbook that students are required to read: Gamelan Gong Kebyar by Michael Tenzer (2000), The University of Chicago Press.

Attendance:
Students are expected to attend every class for the whole quarter. There is only one excused absence allowed.

Classroom Behavior:
Absolutely no talking allowed during class time, except if there is a question or a discussion on the subject matter. Furthermore, students should turn off their cellular phones.

Grade:
First of all, grading will be based upon attendance, motivation or a genuine interest in learning, and effort. Secondly, the final exam. And finally, performance participation toward the end of the quarter. Such activities will be announced in class.
