SPRING QUARTER 2007

Monday

Instructor: Allyn Miner

Course Description

This seminar examines contemporary thinking on issues of history and historiography in ethnomusicology. We begin with readings from recent works that examine methodologies, meanings and uses of history in the study of music and we work with these ideas as we examine selected case studies, of which recent work on South Asia will make up a significant part. Students are not expected to have any special expertise in South Asia. The topics of our case studies will be wide ranging, from early to contemporary and popular genres. Our goal is to gain a familiarity with some good current writing in the field relating to methodology and history and to develop and refine our own thinking about history in the study of music. The seminar will involve short written projects and a final paper.
