Course Description
This course provides an introduction to philosophical aspects of systematic musicology. The intersection of hermeneutical discourses with aesthetics, sociology of music, music criticism and ethnomusicology opens avenues of inquiry that extend the boundaries of these cognate disciplines. New musicology’s engagements with postmodernist critique, ethnomusicology’s confrontation with the crisis of representation, and the complexities of music’s relation to the world present a series of research challenges. This seminar will explore different research fronts through cross-disciplinary reflections on music’s meaning and context.
