Course Description
An intellectual history of Ethnomusicology, from its early inception to its development in the United States (1950s-1980s). Topics for discussion include the definition(s) of Ethnomusicology (e.g., music as/in culture), comparative musicology, the anthropological fusion and its impact on the development of ethnomusicology, scientific method, and cross-cultural analysis in the shaping of ethnomusicological paradigms. Seminal articles will be reviewed in the context of the seminar. Further discussion of Ethnomusicology--its theoretical constructs, case studies, and contemporary issues and recent trends in Ethnomusicology will be addressed in M202; however, M201 serves as a major pre-requisite for M202.
