Ethnomusicology 10A: World Music Theory

Announcements

Dec 6, 2007

Your final projects are due Friday, December 7, in Professor Beken's office, NO LATER THAN 5:00 pm. He will be in his office all day.

Late homework for level 1 students is also due Friday, December 7, to be given to Julie during her office hours, 2:00 - 4:00. She will be in the TA office, the one ABOVE THE CLASSROOM, during this time, unless students come for help, in which case we will go downstairs to one of the classrooms to use a piano.

The final exam is on Tuesday, December 11, from 3:00 - 6:00 pm, in the classroom. Please, please, please, arrive on time or early. If you are napping, set two alarms. If you commute, leave early. Please bring a pencil.

Dec 2, 2007

1.  You will have your final quiz tomorrow, Monday 12/3. You should review:

a.  How to construct a chord based on the given bass note and figured bass symbol.

b.  How to identity fifth chords (in my section we were using the term "triad," but we should use "fifth" chord) in language such as: "C# augmented fifth chord in first inversion."   And then be able to re-create the figured bass symbols that describe how the chord is constructed.

Then, of course, we will have ear training intervals and a dictation.

2.  Homework #7 for level one students is due tomorrow--we will go over it to help review for the quiz.  As I have stated, this quarter only, Julie will accept late homework assignments with full credit.  Next quarter, late homework will be marked down.  The last day to hand in homework is this Friday, 12/7, during Julie's last office hours.

3.  You will be receiving information on how to compose your composition.  This composition (final project) is due this Thursday, 12/6.

4.  On Thursday, Professor Beken will be reviewing everything that will be on the final exam.  The final exam will be Tuesday, 12/11 from 3-6.

5.  On Wednesday, you will do course evaluations for Julie's section.  On Thursday, you will do course evaluations for Professor Beken.  You are requested to being a pencil.

6. Everyone taking 10B will need a PTE number to enroll.  Professor Beken will hand these out after you pass 10A.  But don't worry, there should be plenty of room for all to enroll.

Study Guide for the Monday Quiz (Nov. 19):

--Theory: Circle of Fifths, Major and Minor triads and their inversions
and figured bass symbols

--Ear Training: All intervals (harmonic and melodic only once) and dictation

Note from Julie: I would recommend you practice drawing a circle of 5ths from memory this weekend to see if you can really do it (if you haven't already).  Also, I cannot stress enough: individual practice with ear training on the recommended websites.  This is best done often, in small increments (like 5 minutes every day).

Nov 13, 2007

The quiz this week will be Wednesday, Nov 14, at 10:20.

The second midterm will be next Tuesday, Nov 20, at 9:00.

Nov 4, 2007

There will be no quiz this week.

Julie cannot hold her regular office hours this week. Instead, they will be held on Wednesday from 1:00 - 3:00.

Oct 29, 2007

The midterm will be this Wednesday (not Thursday).

Oct 22, 2007
